There is an increasing need for fossil fuel caused by demographic growth and the demand for fuel by the fast growing and expanding industry. The result of this is an, already longstanding, competition for the resource.
The extraction of easily-accessible sources of fossil fuel (coal, oil and gas) becomes harder, more expensive and more dangerous. Burning fossil fuels (both for heating and as fuel for vehicles) is the main source of 'greenhouse gases', carbon dioxide and others which affect the atmosphere and are altering the climate.
(The term is in fact a misnomer, as this process is not the primary mechanism that warms greenhouses.)
Proclaiming doomsday has no sense. There are a lot of possibilities for a more efficient use of traditional energy. For instance large scale use of LED's and low energy light bulbs, etc.
Even more important is the support for further research to alternative sources of energy.
Such as:
• Solar energy
• Wind energy
• Bio energy (under certain conditions)
And, of course, not only the urge for further reseach is at stake, at the level of the individual household energysaving product should be stimulated and used, e.g.:
• energy saving lamps and LED’s
• high efficiency boilers
• solar panels
• energy saving public transport
• hybrid cars, etc
National governments and international bodies such as the European Parliament and Commission can "guide" people to use “green” energy.
This guidance may take the form of imposing extra taxes when traditional energy is used. The other way round the government can stimulate the use of green energy by subsidizing, for instance, the purchase of solar panels, hybrid cars, etc.
Or as Sir Nicolas Stern states in his "Review on the Economics of Climate change":
"There is still time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we act now and act internationally. Governments, businesses and individuals all need to work together to respond to the challenge. Strong, deliberate policy choices by governments are essential to motivate change."
